Shafts of a Smile

Teetering on a tightrope

Between desolation and survival

Tightens her core, spreads her wings

Breathes; Balance arrives

Floundering in an ocean

Depths of guilt and shame

Lifts her eyes, reaches out

Relaxes judgments; life raft materializes

Peering into the abyss

Pain and destruction wrought

Moves position, shifts focus

Attempts a smile, shafts of daylight break through
