The Dual

Day by day she is confronted

By dual conflicting realities

Enormity of her losses

Stuffed unexpressed.

Unrelieved in pent up grief

Contrasted, in stark relief

Women incarcerated alongside her

Serving astronomical sentences

No sight of family for years

Bereaved of loved ones, now deceased

Moment by moment

Gently or fiercely, as need be

She reminds herself

To count blessings

(She has many)

And still give space

To broken heart

Neither outweighs

Negates the other

In grieving

She hopes to heal
