Killdeer and She

She trudges in gravelly ovals

Counting up laps

Slowly down hours

Across weekend that

Simply won’t end

Kildeer dashes and darts

Field exploring

With body bob-dipping

Crouches nestled

In grassy abode

Killdeer crosses gravel

In path of her

Crunch-crunching steps

Stands with bold-striped dignity

Near rhythmic, repetitive pass

Allows gazing

Visual adulation

Bestowed in continual motion

Object, frantic

In skittish pace-picking

When cautiously

She pauses fascinated

On sustained observation

Wearing gentle bemused smile

Fashioned in respectful regret

She circles and circles

And circles

Around killdeer’s

More purposeful path
