The Sentinel

Late at night,

Bleary-eyed from day’s

dogged soldiering

She returns

To the home that is not one

Alone

Shielded from loneliness

By mind-numbing exhaustion

Nightly she is greeted

in somber salute

by silent watchkeeper

Admonishing her,

in bald reflection:

although stripped bare

dignity endures
