Spring Canticle

Turgid and straining

the river claws

at banks’ captivity

clamoring for freedom.

Amorous songbirds

summon pre-dawn

lovers and the sun

from its slumber.

Petrichor twines round

nascent buds

struggling to arouse

themselves and the senses.

She has been bound

in greyed silent-scream

odorless dreams, longing

to awaken.

Avian Inspiration

Breaking her workday reverie

Female cardinal alights

Click-toed on office windowsill

Gorgeous in muted cloak

Indispensable message conveyed

Urgent from shiny black eyes

Amidst toil and strife

Camouflaged in dullest browns

Beauty animates

For those with open eyes

Words and Birds

In the darkest
Of her days
Twin beacons
Sustained her
Transported her
Through the inferno
And beyond

To survival

Avian visitors
Fluttered and flapped
Past her window slit
Into her imagination
Burgeoning hope
In external miracles
Worldly peace

Verbs, nouns and adjectives
Swooped and drifted
Past guilt and despair
Into her soul
Lifting expression
Voicing angst, anger, pain
Ventilating agony

On a wing and a verse
Synonym snapshot
Verbal portrait
Observational oratory
She built a bridge
Above Dante-ion abyss
To a livable life

Winged Touchstones

Beyond the cell block

Frigid barren cinderblock

Clanging metal monstrosities

That threaten her hold on life

Flit feathered swaths of color

Glimpsed bursts of joy

Pulsing wingbeats that ground

Beneath the crosshatched cage

Stark steel-roofed pen

Orange clad clouded souls

Stretch concrete prone

Absorbing precious rays

Steal brazen avian visitors

Pecking away at despair

Between the floating clouds

Rec yard shifting slideshow

Wing shifting shadows

Promises of vitality

Waft disembodied chirps

Unencumbered song

Whisper tweets for peace

Alongside the gravel track

(In open air of faux freedom)

Feathered friends accompany

Her solitary circular trek

Skittishly silent witnesses

Or raucous commentators

On her tear-stained miles

Within the fenced confines

Skunk-smoke drenched environs

Where pounding figure eights

Beat away re-entry’s terror

‘Hood’s impervious denizens

Flock unfettered to join her

In the ghetto frat house yard

Among the multitudinous trees

Populating nunnery’s grounds

Lonely driven rambles

In search of rejuvenation

Discover her everpresent companions

Surreptitious or broadcast

Winged touchstones of hope

Starling Show

The flock, dozens strong

Settles en masse

Fluttered to restive pause

Stride and peck muddy ground

Among faux-spring greening grasses

Startled, swirl aloft

In unison winged arcs

With much rustling ado

Circle in feathered choreography

Alight, to start anew

Hope Sung

Nestled amid sun’s setting rays

Blown along on blustery

March gusts misplaced

At January’s tail end

Hidden birds sing evensong

Crystalline melody

Floats note by fluid note

Past her untrained

Clearly yearning ear

Mysterious songster

Sings of hope and beauty

Borne upon the sunset

Alights in her darkness

Propels her onward

Through the dismal night.

Wintry Surprise

Today a woodpecker surprised her

Rat-tat-tat-tatting above her head.

She ventured, sneakered

Cross snowdrifts

To stand under a tree.

Soul starved for nature’s commune

Amongst, perhaps, avian companions.

Cardinal peeks brilliant scarlet

Between stark brown branches.

Silently soaking golden rays

Seeds cupped in palm outstretched

Spirits lighten with glittery

Snow-sparkle

Reflecting afternoon sun.

In quiet pecking

Gently beckons

Lifts curious wondering eyes

Black and white flurried movement

Catches casted glance

Upside down and sideways

He flutters branch to branch

Beauty in flustered determination

Rank denoted by rubied crown.

Her lips curve in pure delights

At the unexpected sight

Offering

In the stillness of

The snow drenched world

Whitening hush reigns

With care and reverent awe

Sneakered feet gingerly step

Through deep drifted ledges

Seeking oasis of bare-limbed tree

Harboring hardy feathered friends

“Cheep” descends from on high

Simple and heart-piercing greeting

Chapped hand cautiously outstretched

Open offering of sunflower seed

Frigid wind ripples palm edges

Tilts paltry kernel pile

“Cheep” returns, lowering, nearer

Contemplating proffered snack

Multiple “cheeps” betray

Lingering consideration

In caution, seeds are va-taken

Fingers numbing

She ground scatters seed

Retreats with loving upward glance

Gifting and gifted, both.
